ABOUT THE CHALLENGE
The New School’s Digital Equity Laboratory was tasked to produce a report on the privacy protection policies of 11 major Internet Service Providers in NYC to demonstrate whether New York’s Internet users can exercise choice with regard to their data and information privacy. The Report titled Take it or Leave it: How New York City residents are forced to sacrifice online privacy for internet service was supported by the Mozilla Foundation, the NYC Mayor’s Office of the Chief Technology Officer, the Ford Foundation and the Open Society Foundation.
ABOUT OUR CONTRIBUTION
Members of our team participated as a researchers in the data collection process and the evaluation of Internet Service Providers by applying a customized version of the Corporate Accountability Index methodology developed by the Open Technology Institute’s Ranking Digital Rights (RDR) project. Additionally, we designed the following data visualization dashboard as an online complement for the report.
